A word from Joanne Laurie, our
 Chief Operations Officer

The first quarter for 2012 has proven to be a busy period not only with work opportunities but also keeping our team busy on improvement projects related to our lean journey.

In September last year we welcomed Sam Cook as the Production Centre Manager. His previous experience in the industry and knowledge around lean has resulted in a significant contribution to the business.

We have plans in place for up skilling our team through OSH and lean qualifications and as per our history we will continue to train and add apprentices to our team. We currently have three apprentices training for the Waikato Regional World Skills Competition in April this year and I look forward to reporting back on their performance.

INTRODUCTION

At Stainless Design we turn ideas into reality through the integration of our four business centres – Design, Fabrication, Production and Training.

Our design-to-manufacture operations and leading edge technology provide us with the tools to produce innovative, cost effective and quality products of world class standards.

A message from John:

Already we are approaching the end of our first quarter of 2012 and are pleased to be tracking to our stretch budget targets with opportunities presenting daily!

We recently appointed a new Engineering Manager, Gordon Wallace who has the attributes and experience to take us to the next level.   It would be fair to say that both Gordon and Stainless Design are excited about the journey ahead.   Much of the opportunities for our business growth centre around our strategy for changing the way we operate, through structured ‘step change’ – something most businesses would choose to avoid, preferring instead to make incremental change.

In addition, Justin Brien has recently settled into a Sales role having spent many years as our Production Centre team leader.  We have been struggling to cover the country and are excited about the new opportunities that will be generated through Justin’s knowledge being shared in the marketplace.

Already we have completed our first TFM training course in the Lean Gemba Academy, where the Kaizen Institute hosted a variety of companies from Christchurch, Wellington Auckland and the Waikato.  We will be conducting leadership training again soon at SDL to bring through the next tier of potential team leaders. This is a great opportunity for those in our team to benchmark themselves against ‘best practise’ leadership in a Lean organisation.  This training is considered a pre-requisite for team members wishing to develop as leaders in our organisation.

We are now approaching the final stages of preparation for Emex 2012, where we will again have a stand showcasing our capabilities and skills – we will be found on stand 3035 and look forward to seeing you there!  Emex 2010 was a great opportunity to reinforce to both existing and new customers as to why we are becoming the ‘manufacturer of choice’ and based on this experience we are again showcasing Stainless Design.  We look forward to reporting back in June.
